*4 Works Here*
Didn’t want to do separate posts as it would be a bit too much since there are a few other works I will be posting after.
I read these throughout my Fall semester last year (2020) for a course called Italian - Jewish Writers.
1. Who Loves You Like This by Edith Bruck is a real story about Edith herself and her Jewish family being sent to the concentration camps. It is told from Edith’s perspective and how she and her sister moved through the camps. The brutal reality of the Holocaust is fully shown throughout the text as death, sickness, and humanity clash. It’s a beautiful story, and I’m glad I got a chance to read it.
2. Family Lexicon by Natalia Ginzburg is also a true story, basically having Natalia herself talk about her family and their experience in the 1930s onwards. She discusses the lexicon of her family and how she took certain traditions from her father to her own little growing family. It’s a beautiful story that makes you think about your own lexicon. Q: What lexicon does your family have?
3. The Jewish Husband is a fictional story based on romantic relationships during WW2 and the holocaust. This story follows the narrator who is the Jewish husband. Can’t say too much without spoiling certain things, but it really brings into the light the struggle that many families went through during that time. Definitely worth a read.
4. Keeping House by Clara Sereni is a wonderful non-fiction work. Clara includes recipes that she has learnt throughout her life and writes certain memories after each one. She includes her family and her own traditions and how she changes certain things. Definitely interesting if you like to cook and try new food.
Even though I had so many books to read in a few months, I still thoroughly enjoyed reading and getting to know Italian and Jewish writers.
Q: Do you know any other Italian - Jewish writers that I should check out?
