Studies in Genre: Novel/ Texts I Read

These next 4, I had to read for another of my courses in the fall semester of 2020 called Studies in Genre: Novel.

1. Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe.

Now I’m sure many of you have read this text before but this was my first time and I was somewhat intrigued by it. It made me think about technology and survival instincts. It made me think about how I know nothing about survival, I don’t know how to make a fire, I don’t know how to make baskets and so forth. I would love to learn these things, technology has taken so much from us.

2. The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole and Oroonoko by Aphra Behn are two short texts that were written in the 17th and 18th century. I wasn’t too fond of these two because of how old the writing seemed but it was definitely interesting to read. The stories themselves were different than today’s work, more unnatural than realistic, if that makes sense.

3. Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf was an interesting story and it reminded me of Pride and Prejudice. It was written in the 1920s and it discusses social class and societal events such as parties and significant others. It follows different characters as they all go on their journey through that one day (it is only based on a singular day) as they all differ in social aspects. I even ended up watching the movie on Amazon Video and I found it quite interesting.

Q: Did any of you read one or two of these texts? If so, which ones, and what did you think? Would love to know other’s opinions.
